Statement

My work explores a variety of themes in an attempt to connect to the past and discover new and exciting “landscapes”. The history of a place takes hold in my mind and the physical process of painting is a means of transport to another time, another place in the world. I believe the act itself serves as a bridge to our collective histories and experiences, the known and the unknown. The canvas is the open sea, a place to get lost - to be in a world of my making. As Philip Guston once said, “There is a forgotten place of beings and things, which I need to remember. I want to see this place. I paint what I want to see.”

Travel is an essential part of my process, a way to glean new insights into the flora and fauna and history of a place. With a keen interest in Viking culture I am often attracted to the Nordic region and the prevalence of so many archeological sights.
